Alison Lee (B.F.A. Communications Design ’17) has been named the recipient of the 2016 Charles Pratt Memorial Scholarship, an annual $35,000 award conferred to a third-year undergraduate in a given department. Each year, a new department is chosen to present student projects. This spring, the School of Design’s Undergraduate Communications Design Department moved into the spotlight.


The Charles Pratt Memorial Scholarship was established by Edmund S. “Ned” Twining III, great-great grandson of Charles Pratt, the founder of Pratt Institute, and grandson of Charles Pratt, president of Pratt Institute from 1937–1953, for whom the scholarship is named. The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates the ideals of the founder of the Institute. On the morning of April 8, Pratt Institute President Thomas F. Schutte, Provost Kirk E. Pillow, School of Design Dean Anita Cooney, Department of Communications Design Chair Kathleen Creighton and members of the Pratt family gathered in Steuben Hall for presentations by four undergraduate Communications Design student finalists.


This year, students presented projects that included book, poster, and packaging designs as well as video and film sequences. Lee, whose concentration within Communications Design is Graphic Design, is also pursuing a double minor in English and Art History. She was recognized for outstanding creative achievement in work that reflected her wide range of interests. Her designs included “Shopsins Menu,” a “self-destructive” restaurant menu app; “Over Attached,” a tech reliance game that referenced the renowned communication theorist Marshall McCluhan; and news story pages created in her role as an art director for the Institute’s student magazine, The Prattler. Nicola Householder (B.F.A. Communications Design ’17), Peter Owen (B.F.A. Communications Design ’17), and Spencer Seligman (B.F.A. Communications Design ’17) were named runners-up, and will each receive $5,000.
